Yanlun Wu's Mooncake Packaging Changes into a Traditional Paper Lantern

Yanlun Wu's mooncake packaging reimagines the traditional gift box with a reusable tin design that converts into a paper lantern after the desserts have been enjoyed. Created for the Mid-Autumn Festival, the packaging preserves the role of protecting and presenting the mooncakes during gifting. The lid contains a foldable lantern that can be unfolded and displayed as a decorative keepsake. The project received recognition with an A' Design Award.

Traditional Chinese motifs decorate the lantern to reflect the cultural symbolism of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The reusable design extends the packaging's function beyond food storage and transport without changing its original purpose. The project introduces a second use that reduces waste and encourages recipients to keep the packaging after the mooncakes have been consumed.

Trend Themes

  1. Transformative Gift Packaging — Packaging that shifts from protective container to decorative object creates new value in premium gifting while reducing the perception of waste after consumption.
  2. Cultural Keepsake Design — Festival-specific motifs and rituals are becoming embedded into product packaging, giving brands a way to turn short-lived purchases into emotionally durable collectibles.
  3. Post-use Packaging Utility — Reusable formats with built-in secondary functions signal a growing opportunity for packaging to serve practical or ornamental roles beyond its initial delivery purpose.

Industry Implications

  1. Food Packaging — Rigid tins, foldable inserts, and hybrid paper structures point to new packaging systems that combine product protection, sustainability, and display-ready design.
  2. Confectionery Gifting — Seasonal sweets and ceremonial foods are well positioned for elevated packaging that extends the gift experience after the edible product has been enjoyed.
  3. Home Decor — Decorative objects derived from consumer packaging blur the boundary between retail design and interior accessories, opening space for culturally themed keepsakes with everyday visibility.
