This Modern Bar Stool Design Incorporates the Ancient Burr Puzzle

Incorporating the ancient Chinese Mortise and Tenon technique into its form, this modern bar stool design by duo You-De Chen and Chin-Hua Lin utilizes the strength of the burr puzzle.

A special way to stack up slabs of wood, the burr puzzle makes for a few very strong joint connections that support the base of the chair and keeps the legs from collapsing inwards. In total, these joints are made up of 14 pieces of intersecting metal rods that look like a messy tangle of wires. The user gets to assemble the chair, thus gaining awareness of its intricate construction and taking part in the formation of the design.
