Contorted Luminescent Cages

The Moais Lamps Embody a Time Warp Between Ancient and Modern Forms

As much as the eye appreciates balance and symmetry, there's something special about these Moaïs lamps. They take quirky shapes that stretch and bulge unevenly, yet they're an absolute delight to look at.

Each one has a conical base in black material that differs in height from some of the others. This component gives every illuminator aesthetic and physical stability. On top of these are abstract cage-like forms that have been finished in a bright color. The oblong globes in combination with their playful paint jobs make them wonderfully whimsical items. To complete the Moaïs lamps, Ionna Vautrin made the light-diffusing lampshades with finely patterned textiles. Can you tell that the original inspiration was from the monoliths of Easter Island?
