A community-led initiative in Lithuania has resulted in the creation of hundreds of hand-knitted sweaters to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the national artist and composer, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The project was organized through social media groups and involved over four hundred participants who collectively produced approximately nine hundred garments featuring the likeness of the celebrated figure.
The craft-based tribute for Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis operates alongside a wider official program of cultural events in the capital city of Vilnius, which includes musical performances, art exhibitions, and ballet inspired by the artist's work. The knitters utilize shared patterns and offer mutual support online, with a planned public gathering where participants will wear their finished sweaters to mark the anniversary.
