Mimicking Womanhood Photography

Memymom Explore Adolescence and Desire in 'The Umbilical Vein'

Photography duo 'Memymom' is comprised of Marilene Coolens and her daughter Lisa De Boeck. For their latest series, 'The Umbilical Vein,' the two unearthed many images of De Boeck, taken over the course of her youth and adolescence, from their extensive archives.

Over the years, the mother-daughter team recreated several Hollywood tropes of femininity, from the starlet to the wild child to the rebel. The images are more than just a child playing dress-up in her mother's clothes; they are simultaneously a caricature of adult sexuality, as well as a poignant exploration of adolescent curiosity about it. De Boeck is intimating the signs of womanhood, while her mother's gaze from behind the lens acts as intermediary distancing.

The overall result is a collection of intimate photographs that rest in between girlhood and womanhood.
