Matthew Day Jackson Gives Vibrant Life to Symbols of Death

Memento mori are often images and objects with a more macabre appearance, but Matthew Day Jackson reframes such morbid pieces with an animated sense of color.

This particular body of work is part of the artist's Study Collection 1, which will be part of a two-year art exhibition called Sympathy for the Devil. The name of the show was inspired by the Rolling Stones song, and the creative contributors were assigned the task of incorporating pieces that reflect the lyrics of the musical track. Themes like the celebration of life in light of death, and the compelling exquisiteness of evil are present in this series of sequential rainbow skulls. Formed from the shape of Phineas Gage's skeleton and digitally fused with the artist's own cranium, this work of Matthew Day Jackson will certainly head the Vanhaerents showcase.
