The Market Mobile in Ottawa Brings Healthy Foods to Underprivileged Areas

Healthy food accessibility is one of the biggest challenges that face underprivileged neighborhoods and the Market Mobile targets this particular problem by driving through four such areas in Ottawa, Canada. A pilot project that has been running for two years now, the Market Mobile is built into a OC Transpo bus and carries over 30 different items at a time including local foods and culturally-appropriate foods.

A successful Good Food Market, the Mobile Market shows how pop-up grocery stores can make a huge social impact in urban cities. Kaitrin Doll, Co-chair of Poverty & Hunger Working Group, says, "With the work of community volunteers and the Poverty and Hunger Working Group, we hope the Market Mobile will become part of a new Saturday routine for many Ottawa residents."
