The Lunar Lounger Project Aims to Design Furniture For Space

Lunar Lounger is a project that aims to design furniture for use in future human habitats on Mars, the Moon or indeed anywhere else in space. The furniture currently consists of a prototype flatpack table and chair designed by mechanical engineering students at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

The table is fitted with integrated gas springs which allow for height adjustment, while a modular design with connection ports allow it to be connected with other tables. Meanwhile the chair has foam pads for comfort and support and can be folded completely flat. A pin-and-hole mechanism makes it easy to switch between traditional and kneeling chair variations. Restraints make for convenient use in zero-gravity and low-gravity scenarios where users might otherwise float away.

Astronauts going into space face a wide variety of challenges, so anything adding to their comfort is welcome. The Lunar Lounger project will boost astronauts' comfort levels in the unforgiving and strange environs of outer space and distant planets.
