Illusory Log Cabins

Phillip K Smith III's Log Cabin Design is Nearly Invisible in the Desert

Were it not for the wooden panels on this log cabin design, you might never even see it in the California High Desert. The nearly invisible cabin is a creation of Phillip K Smith III, who transformed a 70-year-old wooden cabin into an interesting abode.

The cabin’s exterior is made up of alternating panels of timber and long strips of mirrors, which reflect the desert around it. This effect makes the cabin seem to disappear into the landscape around it.

Phillip K Smith III dubbed the cabin 'Lucid Stead' and it’s an interesting addition to the desert landscape, since it's exterior is a dynamic one that will always change to reflect projected levels of light, shadow and changes in the land and sky throughout the day and night.
