The 'Life Relative to a Foot' Measuring Stick Explores Lifespans

New York City-based artist and designer Dino Sanchez attempts to answer that question with his latest product, Life Relative to a Foot. What looks to be a standard school ruler turns out to be an exploration of time and space -- a complicated issue simplified to a rather straightforward and direct task. You simply measure the two relative to one another.

One side of the ruler measures a linear foot, while the other measures a lifespan of 80 years relative to that linear foot.

Each ruler is made of bamboo laser-etched with numerals and markings and has a cork backing. Life Relative to a Foot is available through the Paris-based online boutique Vitrine.
