Delicate Bandaged Beauties

Kwon Kyungyup Captures the Pain and Sadness That Lingers Post-Accident

Recovering from an injury, an individual can often feel trapped by the fragility of their body; Kwon Kyungyup captures the disconnection between internal and external representation post-accident.

Cabinodd Gallery director Ella Buzo commented on Kwon Kyungyup's work by saying that "the bandage-covered faces are symbolic of a wound the body remembers: a spiritual, ontological wound that purifies or sublimates emotion." The idea of scarring becomes particularly potent in Kyungyup's work; the notion that something traumatic leaves not only an emotional, but a physical reminder of an experience one would rather forget.

Yet when looking at the paintings of young bandaged women, the audience does not dwell on what lies beneath the dressing, but rather is captivated by the overwhelming beauty that persists despite the victim's sad composure. One almost feels like telling these women to not worry, they're still beautiful.
