Tree Trunk Vessels

Carved Birch Sake Bottles by Kouta Fukunaga

Hokkaido is Japan’s northern island and is a place famous for many things. Not only is the enchanting place known for its ice festivals and seafood, but it is also home to many budding artists who get their inspiration from natural elements. One of these artists is Kouta Fukunaga, who carves vessels out of birch tree trunks.

Although the leading image in the gallery above is of a sake bottle and container (which won first place in the 2008 Takaoka Craft Competition), the other images are also part of Kouta Fukunaga’s collection of work.
