The Koji Takei Pieces Are Modeled After Instruments

The Koji Takei sculptures are made in the shape of ornate musical instruments. To produce these artistic depictions of guitars and cellos, Takei repurposes furniture, hence the chair legs that hang off some of his highly coveted designs.

Although viewers comprehend Takei's creative depiction of the music makers, the cuts of wood are spliced together in chaotic ways. In some cases, this lets on the appearance of 3D formations, making the chords and handles pop out. And yet, despite the chaos, it is at once clear which types of instruments Takei is modeling his work after.

Prior to embarking upon his career in art, Takei was a graphic designer. It is apparent that his capacity for visual layouts has served him well.
