Kengo Kuma Redesigns the Kayanoya Soy Sauce Shop in Tokyo

Kayanoya is a soy sauce shop in Tokyo, and Kengo Kuma recently redesigned the place based on an old warehouse from the company in the southern area of Japan.

The design uses large barrels and attaches them to the ceiling. It's not often that one walks into a shop and sees large barrels hanging from above, but Kengo Kuma manages to make this design work well for the place. The soy sauce manufacturer has been around for over 120 years, and the shop was becoming slightly outdated. Kuma did a great job with reimagining the space while still keeping with traditional aesthetics of the company.

Overall, the shop has a very rustic and traditional feel, which is comforting for visitors upon entering the store and examining the products. Photo Credits: designboom, kayanoya
