Photographer Jurgen Heckel Conveys Severity and Austerity in These Pieces

Gray is a color that many avoid, but Munich-based photographer Jurgen Heckel embraces it in this recent series simply titled 'Pit.'

The photographs depict a quarry without any discernible activity. The severe monochromatic color scheme, coupled with the absence of anything human, lends an alien quality to the work. Indeed, some of the photographs seem as though they were shot by one of NASA's Mars Rovers. It is not as though there was once life in the landscapes the photographs capture, but rather that there never was life.

Yet, the series maintains a surprising and elusive sense of beauty that Heckle should be applauded for discovering in scenes many people would find dull and depressing.
