The Ji Lee ‘Squozen’ installation captures a difficult teenage phenomenon experiened by many during their younger years. Currently on display at the Murphy & Dine Gallery’s ‘Small is Beautiful’ exhibition, the piece displays an awkward youngster who literally does not fit into his surroundings. Lee’s work builds upon his own youthful feelings of alienation and isolation, sentiments that still resonate with the California-based artist to this day.
The Squozen design features a style of dress that is typical of adolescents- baggy sweaters, Levi’s jeans, and a dash of color. And while this is all run of the mill, the faux structure is far too large for the room, a definite misfit. This lack of congruence is exactly what Lee wishes to convey, getting at the more painful outsider issues faced by the juvenile scene. By bringing these themes to the forefront, Lee has brought about the discussion of a topic frequently swept under the rug.
