Vandeventer + Carlander Architects designed the 'Vashon Island Cabin,' a luxurious chalet located on the island it is named after, in Washington State.
The architects renovated a single-storey cabin; due to site restrictions, imposed from an existing drain field, they were unable to increase the size of the home. The architects were, however, able to insert a wooden addition that cantilevers over the basement walls, effectively increasingly floor space without affecting the field. Inside, the wood box contains a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. The addition features a set of sliding doors that open out onto the refurbished deck.
Downstairs, the daylight basement was renovated for space optimization; it houses two bedrooms, a bathroom, a communal living area and new laundry area.
