Stone-Like Cakes

These Interesting Cakes Look Exactly Like Hard Stone

London-based designer Kia Utzon-Frank created a collection of interesting cakes for Clerkenwell Design Week 2016, making the sweet dessert look like cold marble stone.

The cakes were made using printed fondant that was layered on top of sponge, with some then painted in 24k gold. These interesting cakes take on a variety of shapes and sizes, with many presented as tall-standing geometrical shapes and others set into perfect spheres. In order to get the realistic stone look, Kia Utzon-Frank explains that she needed the help of a high quality printer that was able to capture the exact gradient textures of the stone. She uses a chocolate ganache cake recipe, which is rolled with jams to create the bright inside that's exposed when the cake is cut.

Each of the designs bends the expectations of edibility, with Kia Utzon-Frank's collection of soft cakes looking so stone-like that they might be capable of breaking teeth off.
