Autonomous Industrial Trains

These Australian Trains Are Designed to Transport Iron Ore

International mining giant Rio Tinto is beginning to roll out high-tech autonomous industrial trains that are designed to efficiently and safely transport large amounts of iron ore around Australia.

The end result of the AutoHaul project, which began all the way back in 2012, these industrial trains recently completed their first ever long-distance journey without the assistance of a human driver, traversing a distance of 100 kilometers. Given the success of this trial run, Rio Tinto is hoping to roll out the AutoHaul industrial trains more widely as early as 2018, as it is positioned to save the company a great deal of time and resources in transporting iron ore.

This futuristic train is a fine example of automotive and transportation innovation being driven by industrial needs rather than consumer transit.
