Post-Mortem Wireless Detectors

The In Memoriam Device the Ony Yan is Installed in Homes

Designer Ony Yan designs the new In Memoriam device which is essentially a two-part system that is installed in single-person households. This helps with notifying neighbors if there is a death that happens in the home, designed to "encourage a community to look after each other." The prototype system is able to be installed in homes and has a battery-powered odor detector along with a signal lamp linked together by a wireless connection.

It is placed outside of the home and has a glowing light from candles that are meant to attract the attention of neighbors. Ony explains, "The odour detector hangs at eye level – or breathing height – because my chosen volatile organic compounds as indicators of decay, in this case, sulphur compounds, are heavier than the ambient air. It is similarly comparable to installing carbon monoxide detectors, which are often placed at the same height."
