The 'Impatient List' Shows Who's Giving and Who's Waiting

The 'Impatient List' infograph totals the patients waiting for and giving organs throughout American history. Organ donation has grown exponentially through awareness campaigns that have taken place over the past two decades, yet almost 20 Americans die per day in the process of waiting on an organ donation.

However, up from almost 7,000 in 1991, over 14,000 are giving as of 2011. This leaves 8 people waiting for ever 1 donor, but is definitely a step in the right direction. With over 80% of patients needing a kidney, the kidneys are the most in demand and, luckily, expendable for healthy people with two, organ on the list.

As awareness will increase, the wait times (which is currently averaged between 1-2 years) will hopefully decrease. Under the American program which is called "opt-in," to become an organ donor you must actively choose beforehand to donate your organs either by choice or upon death.
