Imkeliene Boersma's LETGO Light Forces People to Drop Their Devices

Dutch designer Imkeliene Boersma has developed an attractive table lamp that does more than simply lighting a corner of one's home; it stimulates conversation. The unique lamp has no on or off switch, replacing that feature with two slots in the base. The lamp will only turn on when two smartphones are in the slots, forcing people to relinquish their devices and, ideally, have a distraction-free conversation with one another.

Boersma's lamp, which is appropriately called the LETGO, comes in two styles, one with a composite concrete shade and plywood base and the other with an iron PLA shade and ash base. Both models function the same, with two slots for smartphones.

Imkeliene Boersma isn't totally opposed to the idea of connectivity. Rather, her lamp is more about finding a balance between online and offline life. This is clear in LETGO's design. Though the slots isolate people's smartphones, they also use wireless Qi charging to keep the phones powered up.
