Kraków-based Kropka Studio designed this house in Poland for a family of four. Located near the city of Zawiercie, the home features the same local limestone that is used to build neighboring churches and castles.
The Polish Jura region, where the site is located, is known for its rolling landscape made up of valleys, limestone rock and cliffs. This landscape has had a meaningful impact on the design of the architecture built on top of it.
This design is hinged upon gabions filled with rock and soil, which are normally used to prevent erosion, but in this case form an ornamental layer around the home. Architect Gosia Lapaj explains that the gabions provide a "camouflage net which covers the bright, spacious interior."
