Smartvoll Architekten designed 'House H,' a palatial estate located in Salzburg, Austria. The architects ensured that each of the home's rooms had access to natural light, that the rooms transitioned from one to the next in a fluid manner and that nature was largely incorporated.
In order to fulfill the client's wish that the home be as pure and natural as possible, the architects went in a paradoxical direction. They constructed the home out of inorganic, geometric shapes that bordered on artificial. In contrast, it made the surrounding landscape even more pronounced. The defining feature of the home, the carport roof, acts almost as a frame to the beautiful scenery outside.
The building regulations demanded a saddle roof, but the architects made sure the traditional form was equipped with new functions, creating the carport roof structure that connects the existing pavilion with the pillar-free zone inside.
