Bamboo-Separated Dining

HAMA Restaurant Features Traditional Japanese House Aesthetic

This beautiful restaurant interior for HAMA restaurant, a place offering Japanese-Brazilian cuisine located in the southern suburbs of Athens, was inspired by a traditional Japanese house layout.

The philosophy behind the restaurant design centers on the balance between open space, or "oku" in Japanese, and closed space, "ma." The designers at k-studio created the interior to comprise enclosed areas separated by bamboo screens. These bamboo enclosures provide patrons with privacy but are not completely closed as to shut off their connection to the open dining area. The bamboo lanterns also ensure that lighting in the HAMA restaurant is done in such a way so as to bring out the beauty of the bamboo while "accentuating the contrast between its warmth and the dark steel and floor."
