The Hacking Black Futures exhibition, which is a part of the 2018 Toronto Design Offsite Festival, is set to open on January 17th and can be accessed until the 21st at the BAND Gallery and Cultural Center. Although admission is free, donations to BAND and the OCAD University Black Youth Design Initiative are encouraged.
The exhibition will sprawl across two floors of the BAND Gallery, with a range of displays that explore different mediums featured. In addition to the videos, prototypes and other works of art that can be viewed, there's also interactive experiences to take part in, which allow attendees to collaborate and gain a deeper understanding of the themes presented.
Most specifically, Hacking Black Futures is said to present "design speculations on Black-centric societies that are devoid of oppression, discrimination, and systemic racism." In doing so, the exhibition will explore the ways in which technological advancements would affect the fictional members of the societies presented.
