Studio Saar Uses Eco-Friendly Design for the Gaushala Building

Architecture firm Studio Saar has built the Gaushala building, which is a dairy facility located in southern Rajasthan. It is constructed from 560 tonnes of reclaimed materials, including steel and rubble for an eco-friendly approach to design and build. The name comes from the word 'cowshed' from Hindi and the Sanskrit translation.

The cows provide milk which is used to make organic ghee and other products. The co-founder of Studio Saar, Ananya Singhal speaks about the design process, "The building sits beautifully in its landscape, with surrounding foliage shielding it from harsh sunlight and allowing for significant ventilation, even in summer. It is a building that the cows seem to love and have grown very comfortable with."
