Plaited Plaid Perches

Frag Tartan Chairs Mimic the Look of Checkered Fabric with Woven Cords

Even when they're slightly busy-looking, plaid patterns have a repetition and a regularity about them. These Frag Tartan Chairs are inspired by the Scottish clan woven cloths, yet they have been executed with a very different material, by a different technique and they produce an unfamiliar effect.

Designer Francesco Rota assembled these dining room chairs from tubular steel, forming fine frames that were then plated with chrome. The surfaces with which the sitter comes in contact are constructed of bound cords that give the seat and backrest strength, elasticity and visual intrigue.

Leather lace was entwined back and forth in crisscrossing patterns for a very abstract rendition of plaid. The Frag Tartan Chairs trade uniformity for whimsicality between the skewed strands in brown, mauve and red.
