The Forest House Features a Sky Garden

Garret Cord Werner designed the 'Forest House,' a contemporary home near Vancouver, Canada.

Though the architects were working with a modest budget when designing the interior and exterior of this residence, they ensured that the construction was high quality. One of the design priorities was to optimize for natural light, making the clients feel as though they're connected to the forest outside. This seamless relationship to the outdoors is achieved through sliding doors and story windows with views of the garden.

The home's entrance is framed with concrete walls that stretch 20 ft. tall. Inside, a floating, open rise staircase is the statement feature. On the upper level, the architects installed one of their signature designs, a "sky garden." The exterior garden is enclosed, yet open to the sky, "provid[ing] a private green space and a wonderful light-filled experience that is not expected on an upper floor."
