This Eco-Friendly Pasta Grows Into a 3D Shape When Cooked

In collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University and Syracuse University, a team of researchers has engineered flat-packed pasta for a more sustainable packaging solution. Sixty percent of pasta packaging, whether it be plastic bags or boxes, is reserved for air. This solution aims to cut down waste from food packaging to the bare minimum for a more sustainable future.

Flat-packed pasta is developed with a groove-based shape morphing technique. It uses low-cost manufacturing methods to stamp, mold, and cast the pasta, transforming it into its predetermined 3D shape once cooked. The stamped grooving process is called parametric surface grooving, which essentially dictates how the pasta will curl and bend when it is cooked.
