The FingerTrak Detects Hand Movement Through Wrist Cameras

Researchers at the 'Cornell SciFi Lab' and the University of Wisconsin have created the 'FingerTrak,' a wrist-worn device that detects hand movement. The FingerTrak detects the movement of fingers on the hand through the use of thermal cameras on the wrist that face toward the hand. These cameras do not simply analyze the fingers and report the information directly; the system they use is much more intricate.

The wristband has four thermal cameras that have been trained to recognize various hand postures. The cameras are placed only a centimeter above the skin, which does not give them enough range to see the fingers directly in many hand positions. The cameras then determine the position of the palm, back of the hand, and other visible elements to determine where the fingers are. This technology works accurately in real-time with a neural network to create a comprehensive image of the hand.
