The Spanish artist Almudena Romero, who is based in London, is currently developing a significant artistic endeavor titled 'Farming Photographs.' This project is a collaborative initiative with the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment — or INRAE, for short.
'Farming Photographs' involves utilizing a two-hectare agricultural field as a living canvas, where cultivated wheat plants will function as organic pixels to gradually form a large-scale image visible from an aerial perspective. Within this context, "each plant functions as a pixel" and "variations in pigment generated through photosynthesis cause an image to emerge across the land." The depicted eye will be visible from above by the spring of 2026.
Almudena Romero and INRAE position the 'Farming Photographs' project as an ecological reinterpretation of a historical photographic technique, with the lifecycle of the artwork concluding with the harvest of the wheat, its transformation into flour, and local distribution.
