Ethanol From Orange Peels

Ethanol From Orange Peels

We've seen ethanol out of corn and sugar cane, but now scientists have discovered a way to use other edibilities, such as orange peels, to help green our gas tanks. The discovery was made by a group of University of Guadalajara students while researching essential oils.

Ethanol is used to dilute gasoline in car engines so that less gas is used. Using organic alternatives like fermented sugars in orange peel, is more eco-friendly than using pure gas which further endorses the damage caused by mass drilling projects.

Tree Hugger was just as excited about the news. "Orange peel adds oxygen to fuel, which helps to neutralize the carbon monoxide emissions," they blogged. "So far it's unclear whether orange-based ethanol would drive up the price of the world's favorite citrus fruit, but at the least the Mexican government is likely to fund more research to find out."

Orange you glad the world is becoming more environmentally aware?
