Single-Sand Grain Photography

The Photos Present Etched Sand Castles Onto Particles of Sand

These etched sand castles couldn't be more microscopic in design as they are created on a single particle of sand. The amazing work was done by artists Vik Muniz and Marcelo Coelho.

Vik Muniz would draw a castle and project it through a special prism to be able to see it in full effect. Marcelo Coelho would then trace the drawing onto each particle by using a focused ion beam. Each line would be etched only a tiny fraction, the width of a human hair. The entire project took both of them four years to complete.

The video showcases the mind-boggling process in more detail. The designs will blow you away. It almost hard to believe that these etched sand castles are made on a single particle of sand once the image is blown up.
