Extruded Seating Systems

Emeco Bench by Shawn Weiland Exaggerates One Dimension

Nothing in life can be experienced without the filter of perspective, and this universal truth is explored visually in the Emeco Bench by Shawn Weiland. The designer took the original 1940s Emeco Chair as inspiration for this eccentric project, allowing just two angles of observation to reveal an exact replica.

This was accomplished through the elongation of the seat in the lengthwise direction, fit for accommodating a hypothetical person with extraordinarily long thighs. This simple physical extrusion then becomes responsible for dramatically affecting its appearance and even altering the way in which users must interact with it.

The backrest of this piece of furniture can no longer function as such unless one is prepared to position his feet straight out along the seat. For the most part, the Emeco Bench by Shawn Weiland becomes a whimsical polished metal surface, ideal for the use of several people side by side.
