Immersive Rainbow Pavilions

Eliasson Creates a Panoramic Rainbow Installation Using Silvered Glass

Artist Olafur Eliasson has installed a large scale immersive rainbow colored panorama pavilion for 2013 called the 'Panoramic Awareness Pavilion.' The installation is located at the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park at the Des Moines Art Center in Iowa. Eliasson is known for creating large installation structures that feature element materials like light, water and air to enhance the audience's artistic experience.

The rainbow structure is composed of 23 panes of silvered glass, held up by thin frames of steel that are arranged to form an open circle. The silvered glass act as a reflective device that functions like a semi-transparent mirror. The kaleidoscope effect is the result of gradual color-transitioning strips in the middle of the panels to display a panoramic rainbow effect.

The art installation is also an architectural piece of work as it allows pedestrians to enter the pavilion and interact with the structure.
