History-Preserving Spaces

Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas Respect Archeology in Their New Design

Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas have designed a luminous underground station in Naples, Italy.

The Duomo Station part of Naple's underground has been completely reimagined and elevated to an immersive and historical experience. The train station is located in Naple's historic Piazza Nicola Amore. The designers made sure to respect the neighborhood's rich archeological and architectural heritage by consciously preserving any important historical features.

While excavating the site, the team discovered the base of a temple that dates back to the first century AD. The designers kept the ancient portico and gymnasium track by preserving them in a museum-like space. The entrance is defined by a geodesic bubble structure made of steel and glass surfaces located on street level. The Duomo Station takes up three floors and boasts a harmonious balance between futurism and lightness.
