Last Monday, the city of Dubai surprised many by announcing they had successfully tested two-seater drone taxis. The completely automated drone taxi service could be the first flying taxi company in the world. The Autonomous Air Taxi looks like a small helicopter powered by 18 rotors, but is capable of transporting passengers without a pilot or crew.
The drone taxis were supplied by Germany manufacturer Volocopter and the test took place close to Jumeirah Beach Park. The eco-friendly unmanned electric vehicle prototype has a maximum flying time of half an hour, a 31 mph cruising speed and 62 mph max airspeed. Equipped with emergency safety mechanisms including parachutes, the AAT prototype hovered 200 meters in the air.
