Voyeuristic Photojournalism

Modern Swingers by Naomi Harris

It seems we just never know what might be going on in our neighbours living rooms and dining rooms, let alone their bedrooms, but judging by a new exhibition of photography set to open this weekend, there’s a whole lot of nookie going on.

Canadian born, New York-based, Naomi Harris, 35, presents a collection of photographs, collected over a five-year, cross-country sojourn, when, wearing little more than a smile and tool belt, she accompanied these "swingers" to 38 conventions, parties, camp outs and holiday dinners.

Harris, an award-winning photographer, with publications in the London Sunday Times, The Telegraph, Marie Claire UK, Newsweek and the New York Times had originally ventured to Florida’s south beach to document retirees, and discovered that in the clothing optional lifestyle, there was a whole lot more going on.

With over three million active participants active in the swinging lifestyle, according the North American Swing Association, it comes as no surprise, or perhaps it does, that these members are not all hot young types, living in big cities, but everyday folk, just like your neighbours, and if the pictures are any indication plainly having the time of lives.

The exhibition opens in LA at M & B Saturday until December 6, also documenting Harris’ work is available in a limited edition 256-page book available from Taschen $500.
