Rankin's Dazed and Confused Covers Redefines the Editorial

Leave it to Rankin, the iconic photographer, to completely throw traditional editorial spreads out the window and try something darker with the Dazed and Confused covers project celebrating 20 years of the magazine. Rankin photographed 20 unique covers with 40 different artists of all backgrounds including Tilda Swinton, Alicia Keys, Kate Moss and Pharrell Williams amongst others.

The spreads experiment with light and dark, casting sharp long shadows over their subjects and sometimes boldly covering the majority of the celebrity face itself. As one reader aptly comments, it displays 1940s film noir style. Indeed there is mystery shrouded in near surrealism with these distinctly styleed photographs, reminiscent of a Quentin Tarantino graphic novel adaptation or the very dark anime film Cowboy Bebop. The Dazed and Confused covers project and Rankin’s work in general have got this writer absolutely enamored.
