Daimler Self-Driving Trucks Have Begun Testing on Public Roads

Daimler self-driving trucks will begin testing on public roads. The trucks that will undergo testing will have Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, and the tests will be conducted on roads in southwest Virginia. The Daimler self-driving trucks will be tested with a driver present who can take control of the vehicle if necessary. As well an engineer will be monitoring the autonomous trucks.

Beginning testing on public roads is a significant mark of progress for Daimler. The company had previously made a public promise to begin testing its autonomous trucks in 2019. Daimler also recently launched an Autonomous Technology Group, that will handle logistics of the trucks, including mapping what routes the trucks will take.

However, Daimler still indicates that the technology will need to continue to be worked on before it is ready.
