The Cyprien Gaillard Beer Pyramid Intoxicates Visitors with a Message

Unlike some of history's most notable viewer participation artworks, the Cyprien Gaillard Beer Pyramid succeeded greatly in making visitors to the KW Institute for Contemporary Art feel comfortable enough to knock a few brews back.

The French artist imported these alcoholic Efes beverages from Turkey to Berlin to construct a prism of 72,000 individual bottles stored in bright blue cases. The invitation to the institution's guests was to not only to break that invisible barrier of touching such a sculpture, but to remove a box, pop a cap and drink up.

The ease with which this exhibition unfolded sends a message that indeed "preserving a monument goes hand in hand with destroying it." The Cyprien Gaillard Beer Pyramid reminds consumers that even priceless pieces of art and history quickly become commodities that get separated by greedy seekers.
