Hamish Monk Architecture designed the 'Waiatarua House,' a creekside home in Auckland, New Zealand. The home is located on a creek gully overrun with bushes, making it a challenge to navigate. The architects wished to respect the sensitive nature of the bush reserve.
The house, which is intended to be a natural respite from city life, is comprised of sculptural volumes that descend towards the creek -- the roof of one floor acting as a level floor for the next. The black-stained timber exterior is shrouded by green foliage. The architects didn't want to interfere or compete with the beauty of the natural surroundings, instead allowing them to take center stage. The result is, "a reductivist idiom, stripped of excessive articulation and noise."
Inside, the house is arranged to provide its inhabitants with a "range of spatial experiences," including a sterotomic spatial diagram that accommodates vertical circulation.
