Traffic-Altering Projects

This Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems Dashboard Changes Lights

This experiment uses cooperative intelligent transport systems to allow some drivers to turn red lights green. Funded by the European Commission, the Compass4D project hopes by giving ambulances and other high-priority automobiles this power, the number of traffic accidents and congestion will decrease.

Participants have a dashboard with Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) integrated into their vehicles. Similar to an iPad, this onboard communications system is connected to a traffic control center that gives advice on how fast drivers need to go to make green lights and what roads to choose to avoid collisions. Priority vehicles like cargo trucks, buses and ambulances will get green lights when they come up to intersections. The Compass4D initiative will take place in seven European cities.
Trend Themes
1. Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) - The integration of C-ITS into vehicles presents opportunities for further experimentation and implementation in road infrastructure, traffic management, and driver safety.
2. Green Light Priority - The implementation of green light priority for high-priority automobiles such as ambulances and cargo trucks could lead to a reduction in traffic accidents, congestion, and travel time.
3. Dashboard Systems - Dashboard systems such as the C-ITS-integrated system used in this experiment present opportunities for further integration with other technologies and devices to improve road safety and traffic management.
Industry Implications
1. Transportation - The transportation industry stands to benefit greatly from the implementation of C-ITS and green light priority systems, allowing for more efficient and safe travel for drivers and passengers.
2. Technology - Advancements in technology such as C-ITS dashboard systems can disrupt and innovate the transportation industry by improving road safety, reducing traffic congestion, and optimizing travel times.
3. Emergency Services - Implementing green light priority for high-priority automobiles such as ambulances presents opportunities for the emergency services industry to improve response times and potentially save more lives during emergency situations.
