Designed by Studio 8 1/2, the ConTemporary Library was installed in a most unusual setting.
Set up for less than a week, the library was located within the walls of an abandoned 16th century Turkish bath house in Plodiv, Bulgaria. The Turkish bath, or hammam as it is traditionally called, features a central circular lounge where the temporary wooden library structure was installed. All of the shelves of contemporary books, laptops and cushions, were surrounded by moss-covered walls. People could sit in comfort and read within these ancient walls.
Although a contrast was created between old and new architecture, the ConTemporary Library, a play on the words contemporary and temporary, seems as though it was right at home in the midst of the Turkish bath house.
