'Patent' opened doors in Manhattan's NoMad district and it is a dual concept establishment that is a functioning and well-lit coffee and pastry shop during the day and a speakeasy— an illicit business that sells alcoholic beverages, by night. The alternate identities are developed by creative agency Simmer's Ryan McKenzie and sport the clever names of 'Patent Coffee' and 'Patent Pending.' After 5PM, the doors of the cafe lock and the rather surreptitious cocktail cave comes into use. Patrons need to buzz at street level to enter the grounds of a radically different and romantic Patent.
The dual concept establishment is located within a building of recent historic significance. The cafe and secret-door underground cocktail bar occupy the cellar of the Radiowave Building— a site where famous inventor Nikola Tesla lived and worked in.
