Portable Composting Toilets

The Compost Kliko Toilet Makes Use of Human Waste

Almost every culture on the planet has a taboo around human excrement, but Dutch design studio Makkink & Bey is looking to break loose of that stigma with the Compost Kliko Toilet. The portable outhouse collects urine and feces and turns those materials into perfectly usable compost for farms or gardens.

Rianne Makkink and Juergen Bey, the duo behind Makkink & Bey, have used the method employed in Compost Kliko Toilet on their own farm for a number of years. The process is relatively simple: the toilet does not use any water, so feces is collected in the receptacle alone. After using the toilet, the user sprinkles ash on it to reduce odor and enrich the compost. Over time, the waste will naturally transform into rich compost. Urine drains into a separate receptacle where it can be collected and used for producing electricity.
