Charcoal by Formafantasma is a sculptural water purifying system based around a technique that has been used in Japan since the 17th century. In place of basic sticks of charcoal, however, which has been used in similar modern interpretations for daily use such as the Eau Good Water Bottle, Charcoal by Formafantasma revolves around a much more artistic aesthetic.
As part of the Confrontations exhibition held by the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, Charcoal by Formafantasma is deeply rooted in Swiss tradition despite the Japanese reference. The unique shapes were once made out of wood that had been irrevocably charred and then sculpted into various shapes. These shapes mimic such everyday objects as a paddle, lid, funnel and ladle.
