The Casa Diez Pies is a Cliffside Residence in Mazunte, Mexico

The Casa Diez Pies is a cliffside residence designed by Studio Font on a steep coastal site overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Mazunte, Mexico. Raised on 10 inhabitable concrete columns, the 250-square-metre house minimises contact with the surrounding vegetation while integrating staircases, bathrooms and storage within its structural supports. Stepped floor slabs follow the site's natural topography, creating interconnected living spaces that open to the ocean through full-height folding timber shutters and private terraces.

The exposed concrete structure is cast in situ and pigmented in a pale terracotta tone, with curved forms inspired by the eroded rock formations of nearby Punta Cometa. Timber wall linings, ceilings and bespoke joinery introduce warmth throughout the interior, complementing the concrete framework. Rooftop terraces connected by external concrete staircases include slatted timber canopies, skylights integrated into selected columns and a shallow swimming pool.

Trend Themes

  1. Elevated Eco-architecture — Cliffside homes supported by minimal-footprint structures highlight opportunities for residential designs that preserve natural terrain while delivering premium coastal living experiences.
  2. Habitable Structural Columns — Integrating bathrooms, storage and circulation into support columns reframes structural elements as multifunctional spatial systems for compact and challenging building sites.
  3. Terrain-following Floorplans — Stepped layouts that mirror steep landscapes create potential for more adaptive residences where architecture responds fluidly to topography instead of reshaping it.

Industry Implications

  1. Residential Architecture — High-end housing can be reimagined through site-sensitive construction methods that balance dramatic views, privacy and reduced environmental disruption.
  2. Sustainable Construction — Low-impact foundations and locally expressive materials point to new building approaches for fragile coastal and hillside environments.
  3. Luxury Real Estate — Distinctive cliffside properties with integrated terraces, pools and panoramic openings signal demand for experiential homes rooted in natural settings.
