Burlow was inspired by 18th-century grain store buildings in England. As a result, the structure is slightly raised from the ground. The cantilever edge produces an unexpected and dramatic effect as it creates the sensation that "the section of the house is hovering above the ground unsupported." In order to magnify this effect, Jonathan Burlow employed Danish clay brick as it has "unusually long proportions" that will surely exaggerate the positioning of the cantilevered house.
